Shift from Plastics to Sustainable alternatives

We must appreciate that plastics are unique, innovative, and versatile materials that can contribute to protecting the environment when used responsibly. The key is to recognize that there is no silver bullet to sustainability, only a combination of well-designed strategies striving for a more sustainable future.

Comparative analysis of commonly used emulsions

Emulsion %Chemistry Nature Suitable substrates Hydrolysis resistant Price
Acrylic Amorphous Paper, film Yes Average
Polyurethane Dispersion Semi crystalline Paper, film, foil Yes High
Ethylene Acrylic Acid Semi crystalline Paper, film, foil Yes High
Ethylene vinyl acetate Semi crystalline Paper, film, foil No Average
Polyvinyl acetate Amorphous Paper No Low

Important Note:

Water based chemistries often have the capacity to provide coatings with lower heat activation temperatures – because of ease in formulation modifications.

Texobond BL-1020

Texobond BL-1020 is a heat seal blister coating for bonding PET, PVC, APET and PS. Surface chemistry and glass transition temperature are the key parameters which make Texobond BL-1020 a high performing material. It can be used for both 'in-line' and 'off-line' processes.

Texobond F-107

Texobond F107 is a water-based heat seal coating for sealing aluminum foils. Unlike conventional heat seal coatings, Texobond F107 has excellent adhesion to metal surface which avoids ‘stringing’. The coating has very good antiblocking properties and low coefficient of friction.

Texcryl HS-2028

Texcryl HS-2028 is a water-based coating used for heat sealing applications in paper and similar porous substrate materials. Texcryl HS-2028 is tack free when dry and activates only on providing heat.

Aqueous Barrier Coating Performance

The water rolling-off angle: figs. (1–4) are images of a 5 μl water droplet being placed on the tilted surface of coated paper. The water droplet began to roll off the superhydrophobic paper surface as the tilting angle of the surface increased.

Gas Barrier Resistance, Biodegradability & Recyclability

Moisture Vapor Transmittance Resistance 0 - 5 cm3.um/m2.day.atm
Biodegradability 20 – 100 cPs
Heat Activation Temperature 90oC
Repulpability 99.7%

To verify repulpability, alkali dissociation and dispersibility were evaluated, and recyclability was confirmed. Repulpability refers to the characteristic by which, during repulping of used paper, the materials coated on the paper do not remain attached to the pulp but completely dissolve in water.

Biodegradability evaluation was confirmed by lab scale simulated industrial composting conditions.

Texcryl P-851

Texcryl P-851 is an acrylic based barrier coating imparting both water and OGR properties. It does not soften upon heating, preventing blocking and suitable for heat stamping processes. Being wax free it has good gluing ability and is repulpable too. Application areas include paper plates, bowls, cartons, take-out boxes and like.

Texobond P-1100

Texobond P1100 is a water-based heat seal coating, having both hydrophobic and oleophobic characteristics. It is designed to replace wax or polyethylene coatings on paper substrates. It provides heat sealing for both face-face and face-nonface bonding. Application areas include paper cup stock, paper cutleries, food packaging and like.

Texsil CWR

Texsil CWR is a nano-silicone coating solution for paper surfaces for imparting superhydrophobicity and maintaining its original look and texture. The product is PFAS free and not a health hazard, ready to use by spraying or padding processes. Texsil CWR is odor free after drying and has long lasting properties.
